Bikiniastrea maritima

Nemenzo, 1971

Corallum hemispherical, pedunculate, light; epitheca thin, narrow band separating living from non-living portions. Diameter 10.5 cm, height 7 cm; living portion (as measured on lower surface) ranging from 0.5 cm to 4 cm.

Corallites various shapes-circular, oval, triangular, irregular. Non-dividing ones almost circular, up to 11.5 mm across; most assume other shapes because of various stages of division and fusion. Projecting from 4 mm to 12 mm above general level, the latter figure obtaining at peripheral region of corallum.

Septa 35-42 in big non-dividing corallite, thin but thickened over calicinal rim; all exsert by little over 1 mm over wall; edge marked with prominent flattened granulous teeth set across it on exsert portion but becoming less prominent towards fossa; surface laxly spinulate. Few primaries stand out prominently being very wide, thick, with conspicuous paliform lobes. Others are thin but still with paliform lobes. Some septa of higher cycles join those of lower cycles before columella. Most of those higher cycles produce very tall teeth in their lower portions. Calicinal fossa cylindrical because all septa are vertical.

Costae thick, corresponding to septa, their spines similar to those on exsert portion of septa but becoming lower below; further reduced to rows of granules of intercalicinal areas. Blister vesicles (dessipiments) between costae all over intercalicinal areas.

Columella spongy, depressed.

Remarks:Another specimen, C-861, is smaller, around 6 cm across. Its corallites look open, the calicinal fossa is funnel-shaped. The exsert portions of the septa have coarser, irregularly arranged spines; the intercalicinal areas are more blistery than those of the type.
