Montipora florida

Nemenzo, 1967

Corallum flowerlike, the broad thin folia concentrically arranged, standing on narrow base; 32 x 28 cm across open top; 14-15 cm high to edge of lowermost folium. Lowest folium up to 20 cm wide; edge 2 mm thick. Upper surface showing shallow concentric folds and deeper radial wrinkles; roughened by numerous adnate conical protuberances (papillae), each carrying a calicle at its apex; peripheral strip of around 2 cm wide still free of papillae. No epitheca.

Calicles numerous, unevenly distributed from very close to each other to 1 mm or more apart. Average diameter 0.4-0.6 mm. Two kinds – those carried on papillae prominent, with calices directed toward growing edge of folium; those within valleys among papillae are crowded, with vertical calices. Calices variable in shape especially those in valleys.

Septa arise some distance below calicinal rim so that calicles appear submerged. Six primaries thin, narrow, hardly reaching radius half points, surface rough directives not distinguishable. Secondaries slight, occasional. Loculi continuous into general reticulum.

Intercalicinal areas crowded with low spines with abundantly granulous tips, uneven in height. Reticulum not visible, except at edge or corallum where spines are not yet fully developed. Lower surface of folium with marked radial wrinkling; almost completely devoid of calicles; granulous spines producing velvety effect.
