Seriatopora prescillae

Nemenzo, 1971

Corallum an almost spherical clump of relatively short stems and branches, anastomosing mostly by connecting bridges rather than actual fusion. Living portion at most 4 cm. Stem around 6 mm across at base. Branchlets slightly tapering, tips obtuse (blunt), diverging at wide angle, sometimes rounded angle; one 15 mm long, 4 mm across at base, 3.2 mm just below tip; another 17 mm long, 4.5 across at base, 2.5 mm just below tip. Dichotomous branching seen in most branches but this is not true for all. Tips not clearly winged.

Corallites not in serial arrangement towards the tips of some branchlets. Close to the tips they are oval, 1x 0.7 mm diameter, surrounded with spines which are taller on the distal side; septa almost absent or faintly recognizable; columella very prominent, thin or thick ridge along long axis of calice, usually produced at the middle into a low spine which may reach level of mural edge. Lower down the branchlets, calices become rounded, surrounding spines low, the 6 septa more obvious and columella becomes thick oval; medial pits deeper. On the branches, the corallites assume appearance of those of Stylophora but for the lateral pits – prominent 6 septa, columella with single low style. In all cases, two directives continuous with columella.

Peritheca typically dense, covered all over with sharp spines, evenly distributed.

Remarks:This species when examined at the bases of the stems and branches could be mistaken for a Stylophora because of the structure of the calicles. However the upper regions have the typical Seriatopora structure. Also the characteristic lateral pits are present throughout.
