Turbinaria carcarensis

Nemenzo, 1971

Corallum foliate, cup-shaped, pedunculate. Peduncle short, rather stout. Folium 31 x 26 cm across at rim, 11-15 cm deep; edge 2-2 mm thick gradually thickening towards center. One side of corallum folded inward showing tendency towards curcullate folding.

Corallites distant; some serially arranged but only for short distances, never all around; those in same row 2-5 mm distant (measured from edge to edge); distance between rows 6-12 mm; immersed in central region; with slightly elevated rim some distance away, finally becoming ascending at peripheral region. Calice oval, 2 x 2.5 mm across, mostly vertical; those near edge facing border because lower wall more developed than upper but always adnate.

Septa usually 16-20, extending to about a third of radius then drop down almost vertically to columella; mostly thin but one or 2 thicker ones interspersed in some calices, each of latter produced by union of 2 protuberances or platelets from calicinal wall. Septal surfaces finely frosted; edge slightly crinkled and denticulate specially on upper portion. Loculi distinct, petaloid.

Columella oval or linear, convex; consisting of tubercles with rounded tips or twisted platelets. The platelets are usually found in oval columella where they stand across long axis. In most cases a distinct central lamella present.

Ridge and furrow arrangement very distinct in wide coenenchyme; ridge as thick or thinner than furrows, their edge cut into segments without obvious spines. On non- calicinal lower surface but more uniform in texture.
